Dead Rails Class Mastery Guide: Levels, XP & Quests
Dead Rails Class Mastery guide: 10-level tracks, XP sources, daily quests, and the fastest way to level up your class.
What Is Class Mastery in Dead Rails?
Class Mastery is the per-class progression system in Dead Rails. Every class has its own 10-level track, and playing with that class earns Mastery XP that unlocks permanent perks one level at a time. The system launched on August 15, 2026 with four classes supported in the first wave: Cowboy, Doctor, Miner, and Vampire.
The fastest way to level Class Mastery is to farm Endless mode and clear town zombie hordes, because basic zombies spawn in large groups and award the same XP as much tougher enemies. Stack that with your class's daily quest — worth 150 Mastery every day — and take every fight you can, since kills are worth about 15 XP each, or roughly 30 during XP bonus windows.
How Class Mastery Works
Class Mastery gives each class its own growth track with ten levels, and a few rules define exactly how the system behaves:
- Ten levels per class. Each level is a milestone on that class's track. You earn Mastery XP from normal play, and every level you reach unlocks something permanent for that class — a discount, a faster ability, or another perk that makes the class stronger for the rest of your account's life.
- Progress is tracked per class. Playing Doctor earns nothing for your Cowboy track. Mastery XP only banks onto the class you are playing when you earn it, so if you want a specific class leveled, you have to actually queue up as that class.
- Four classes at launch. The first wave supports Cowboy, Doctor, Miner, and Vampire. Other classes are not part of Class Mastery yet, and RCM Games has not announced when or whether more classes will be added, so treat any perk lists for the remaining roster as not yet announced.
Because progress is tied to the class you play, Class Mastery quietly rewards maining. A player who runs twenty matches as Doctor ends up with a far more valuable Doctor than someone who spreads those same twenty matches evenly across four classes — same playtime, very different account power.
How to Earn Class Mastery XP
Mastery XP comes from simply playing Dead Rails, but three sources do almost all of the work. Knowing them lets you steer every run toward the track you are leveling.
Kills
Every enemy you kill is worth roughly 15 XP toward the class you are playing. During XP bonus periods that value roughly doubles to around 30 per kill, which means bonus windows are worth planning your grinding sessions around. Live event periods help here too — the Fallen Frontier dispatch running October 10–12, 2026 carries XP rewards on top of the normal gains, making that weekend a smart time to push a track.
Since Dead Rails keeps constant pressure on you with outlaws, entities, and hordes, aggressive players passively farm Mastery just by fighting through threats instead of sneaking past them.
Winning runs
Completing runs earns Mastery XP, and winning a run adds a bonus on top of everything you accumulated along the way. This means a full, successful run is worth dramatically more than an early wipe, even if both contained the same number of kills. Play to survive to the end station first and let the kills happen naturally — if you struggle with the late game, our Dead Rails tips and tricks guide covers the survival fundamentals.
Selling loot
Selling items also generates Mastery XP. This fits perfectly with how Dead Rails is already played: you strip towns of valuables and sell them as you travel the rails. Every sale now quietly feeds your class track, so never leave a town without looting the shops and selling everything valuable before the train pulls out.
Daily Mastery Quests for Every Class
Each class has one daily quest, and each completed quest pays out 150 Mastery. That is a large guaranteed chunk of progress every single day, so treat the quest as the first thing you knock out each session.
| Class | Daily Quest | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Miner | Mine 5 ores | 150 Mastery |
| Doctor | Revive 2 players | 150 Mastery |
| Cowboy | 5 headshot kills in a single run | 150 Mastery |
| Vampire | 15 melee kills | 150 Mastery |
Each quest maps onto something the class already wants to do:
- Miner — mining five ores takes minutes. Detour to rocky outcrops and mining areas early in your run and the quest is finished long before the first night falls.
- Doctor — reviving two players is easiest in public lobbies, where random teammates go down regularly. Two successful revives happen naturally over the course of a run.
- Cowboy — five headshot kills in one run takes aim rather than luck. Take careful, deliberate shots at slower targets like zombies instead of spraying at fast movers, and the counter fills quickly.
- Vampire — fifteen melee kills sounds like a grind, but the Vampire's entire kit is built around melee combat, and town hordes hand you clustered targets to chew through.
The quests reset daily, so consistent short sessions beat one long weekly marathon. Four days of quest completions is 600 Mastery of guaranteed progress before you count a single bonus kill.
Class Mastery Rewards: Doctor Levels 1 and 2
The clearest example of how rewards scale comes from the Doctor's first two levels:
- Level 1 — medical items cost 25% less. The Bandage drops from $10 to $7, and Snake Oil drops from $35 to $27. If you buy medical supplies in every town you pass, that discount compounds over a run and frees up cash for weapons and train upgrades.
- Level 2 — faster revives. Revive time improves from 3 seconds to 2.25 seconds. A quarter of the time shaved off every revive is often the difference between getting a teammate back up safely and taking a hit while you do it.
These perks are permanent once unlocked. The pattern is clear: even the earliest levels deliver meaningful quality-of-life and economy value, which is exactly why it is worth pushing one class deep into its track instead of stalling at level one or two.
The Fastest Way to Level Up: Endless Mode
If XP per hour is the goal, Endless mode is the answer. Towns in Endless mode spawn basic zombies in large groups, and — this is the key detail — those basic zombies award the same Mastery XP as much tougher enemies. High target density, low threat, and full XP value per kill make town-clearing loops in Endless mode the most efficient farming route in the game.
The loop is simple: roll into a town, clear every zombie you can find with your class's weapons, sell the loot you stripped from buildings, and move on to the next town. Every kill pays about 15 XP (around 30 during bonuses), every sale adds more, and if you survive to win the run, the win bonus stacks on top of the whole session.
Pair the loop with your daily quest and a single session does double duty. A Vampire clears the 15-melee-kill quest inside one town sweep. A Cowboy banks headshots on the same zombie crowds. A Miner weaves ore stops into the route between towns. A Doctor queues public lobbies so the two revives come to them.
Which Class Should You Level First?
Level the class you actually enjoy — Mastery only accrues on the class you play, so forcing yourself through a class you dislike is the fastest way to burn out on the system entirely.
If you are choosing purely on value, all four launch classes are worth the investment:
- Doctor pays off immediately: cheaper medical items at level 1 and faster revives at level 2 make every future run smoother, especially in team play.
- Vampire pairs the most naturally with Endless mode farming, since the melee-heavy daily quest and the zombie-clearing loop are the same activity.
- Miner has the easiest daily quest in the game — five ores — so it is a near-free 150 Mastery per day even if you only play the class casually.
- Cowboy turns its headshot quest into permanent aim practice, and the class scales well for players confident with revolvers and rifles.

FAQ
What is Class Mastery in Dead Rails?
Class Mastery is Dead Rails' per-class progression system, launched on August 15, 2026. Each class has its own 10-level track, and you earn Mastery XP by playing — from kills, winning runs, and selling items. The first wave supports Cowboy, Doctor, Miner, and Vampire, and every level you reach unlocks permanent perks for that specific class.
How do you level up Class Mastery fast in Dead Rails?
The fastest route is Endless mode: town zombies spawn in large groups and award the same XP as tougher enemies, so clearing towns is the best XP-per-hour activity in the game. Combine that with your class's daily quest (150 Mastery per day), take every kill you can (about 15 XP each, around 30 during bonuses), and sell everything you loot along the way.
What are the daily mastery quests in Dead Rails?
Every class has one daily quest worth 150 Mastery: the Miner mines 5 ores, the Doctor revives 2 players, the Cowboy lands 5 headshot kills in a single run, and the Vampire gets 15 melee kills. Each one can be completed inside a normal session in minutes, so they should be your first priority every day you play.
Which class should I level first in Dead Rails?
Level whichever class you enjoy most, since Mastery only builds on the class you are playing. If you want the smoothest start, the Vampire's melee quest pairs perfectly with Endless-mode zombie farming, and the Miner's five-ore quest is the easiest 150 Mastery in the game. For full rankings across the roster, see our Dead Rails class tier list.
Do all Dead Rails classes have Class Mastery?
No. The first wave covers four classes only — Cowboy, Doctor, Miner, and Vampire. Other classes are not part of the system yet, and no schedule for expanding Class Mastery to the rest of the roster has been announced.
