Dead Rails Bonds Guide: All Uses & Sources
Everything about Bonds in Dead Rails: what they are, all sources, and how to spend them on classes, trains, and starting items without wasting any.
What Bonds Are in Dead Rails
Bonds are the premium currency in Dead Rails. They are the small stack of certificates you loot from banks, vaults, and special locations, and they are the only currency that buys the things that permanently change your account: Classes, Trains, and Starting Items. Regular Money pays for in-run purchases like coal, ammo, and gun-store weapons, but nothing you buy with Money follows you between runs. Bonds are the opposite — everything they buy is permanent, which makes them the real progression currency of the game.
The distinction matters because it changes how you think about every run. Money is disposable; Bonds are an investment. A town with $500 of loot and three Bonds is worth more long-term than a town with $1,000 and no Bonds, because those three Bonds move you permanently closer to your next class unlock.

How Bonds Work
A few rules define the whole system:
- Permanent balance. Bonds you loot during a run bank to your account when the run ends (win or wipe) and stay in your lobby wallet. Nothing you do in a run spends Bonds — all spending happens between runs.
- Location-bound spawns. Unlike Money, which drops from almost everything, Bonds only appear in specific places: safes, bank vaults, treasure caches, and reward payouts. Every building has a small chance to hold a single Bond, but a handful of locations hold most of the supply.
- Roughly 4,370 to unlock everything. Community tallies put the total cost of every Class and every Train at around 4,370 Bonds. That is the realistic endgame target, and it is why efficient earning matters.
- Purchasable with Robux. You can buy Bonds directly, but every item they unlock is also obtainable through play. Nothing in the Bond shop is exclusive to spenders.
Every Way to Get Bonds
Here is the complete source list, ordered roughly by how much of your total income each should provide.
| Source | Typical Yield | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full POI clear (solo) | 100-130 per run | Repeatable | The core farming method |
| Town banks | 10-20 per run | Repeatable | Safest income, low gear needs |
| The Castle | 10-15 per visit | Repeatable | Highest single-location yield |
| Sterling's Bank + Mines | ~12 per visit | Repeatable | Vault code + Jade Tablet room |
| Fort Constitution | 3-7 per visit | Repeatable | Key from Captain Prescott |
| Tesla Lab event | 2-6 per event | Repeatable | Also awards the Electrocutioner |
| Challenge Board (one-time) | Varies, dozens total | One-time | Large early-game boost |
| Weekly challenges | Small, resets weekly | Repeatable | Steady passive trickle |
| Robux purchase | Any amount | Optional | Skips the grind |
The one-time Challenge Board payouts are easy to overlook and are the fastest early-game Bonds you will ever see — if you are a new account, clear every challenge you can before you start optimizing routes.
Where Bonds Spawn: Location Reference
For route planning, these are the spots that reliably hold Bonds. Yields are ranges because spawns vary slightly per map.
| Location | Bonds | How to Access |
|---|---|---|
| Banks in towns | 10-20 across a run | Crowbar, lockpick, or explosive |
| The Castle (spawns before 40 km) | 10-15 | Fight through werewolves and vampires |
| Sterling's Bank vault | 5 | 4-digit code (1 in bank, 1 in white house, 3 in mines) |
| Sterling's Mines hidden room | 7 | Collect 3 Jade Tablets (1 church, 2 mines) |
| Fort Constitution Supply Depot | 3-7 | Key dropped by Captain Prescott |
| Tesla Lab | 2-6 | Build Tesla, survive the defense, wheel escape |
| Any building | 0-1 each | Check shelves, safes, and desks |
The full route that strings all of these together — and the per-phase tactics for each stop — is in the Bonds farming guide.
How to Spend Bonds: Priority Order
The shop sells three things — Classes, Trains, and Starting Items — and they are not equally valuable. With roughly 4,370 needed to clear the whole shop, order matters.
| Category | Total Cost | Priority | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ability Classes | 2,500+ | High | New playstyles, faster clears, better survival |
| Trains | 1,200+ | Medium | More inventory means more loot per run |
| Starting Items (Guns) | 500+ | Medium | Smoother early game, but lootable in-run |
| Starting Items (Armor) | 170 | Low | Fully replaceable with looted gear |
| Cosmetics | Varies | Last | No gameplay effect |
Classes first. A new class changes how every future run plays out — more damage clears POIs faster, better survivability saves runs you would have lost. Classes compound; a better class farms Bonds faster, which buys the next class sooner.
Trains second. The Armored train (250 Bonds) is the standout pick — bulletproof and forgiving, which directly raises your run success rate. Our train upgrades guide and best train ranking break down the full lineup.
Starting Items last. Guns and armor you can buy at start are also lootable fifteen minutes into any run. They are convenience purchases — nice once your class and train lineup is complete, wasteful before that.
Smart Spending Rules
- Buy one class at a time, fully. Half a roster of cheap classes helps less than one strong main you have practiced. Check the class tier list 2026 before each purchase.
- Never buy the Gold Rush Train. Community consensus is that it is the worst value in the shop — the Armored train does its job for a fraction of the price.
- Keep a small reserve. Holding 100-200 Bonds means a new class release or a price change never leaves you scrambling.
- Do not convert progress into cosmetics early. A cosmetic skin is the only purchase in the shop that makes your account zero percent stronger.
FAQ
What are Bonds used for in Dead Rails?
Bonds buy Classes, Trains, and Starting Items in the lobby shop. These are permanent account unlocks — unlike Money, which only pays for in-run goods like coal, ammo, and store weapons.
How many Bonds do you need to buy everything?
Approximately 4,370 Bonds covers every Class and every Train as of the latest update. Adding all Starting Items and cosmetics pushes the true completionist total higher.
Can you convert Bonds into Money or Money into Bonds?
No. The two currencies are separate. Money is earned and spent inside runs; Bonds are earned from POIs and challenges and spent in the lobby. There is no exchange in either direction.
Do you lose your Bonds if you die?
No. Bonds you looted during a run are banked to your account when the run ends, win or lose. Dying costs you the unlooted Bonds still on the map, never the ones you already picked up.
Are Bonds the same as Robux purchases?
Bonds can be bought with Robux, but they are the same currency either way. Anything a spender buys, a farmer can earn — there are no Robux-exclusive items in the Bond shop.
